A book is an oral medium for recording data in the form of text or images, usually written on one or more single pages bound together and secured with a durable cover. The most common technical term for this binding arrangement is hardback. Hardback books are durable and quite dense compared to paperback and pocketbooks. As a result, they cost more and take longer to write out. However, in terms of durability and life of the written work, hardback books are superior.
There are two basic styles of hardcover books. One style features one edge of pages bound together at the front. The other style features one edge of pages bound along the top and spine. Hardback book pages are almost always printed on premium quality paper.
Printed books are divided into two categories: printed matter and printed books. Printed matter consists of all items that can be read from a book. Printed books are usually ordered directly from the printer. For example, a book is ordered from the printer to be made into a greeting card when it is received at home. In some cases, a business may order printed booklets and leaflets to be sent to a client.
On the other hand, printed books are those that are not purchased from printers. These include comic books, tabloids, encyclopedias, booklets, and the like. A hard copy of a novel or a collection of short stories or a collection of poems or songs would be considered as a printed book, while a book containing only pages that are opened and closed and containing no pictures or illustrations would be considered as a closed book.
A book that is written is divided into two categories: text and non-text. A text book contains all the pages in the written work. A non-text book contains only the pages in a printed edition of the novel or the book itself. A text book could contain just one hundred fifty pages, or it could contain one thousand and four hundred pages. In the case of a novel, it would always be the case that the work is entirely text. This is the reason why most printed works have been divided into single pages.
Non-fiction books are divided into fiction and non-fiction. If an author has written a novel and has decided to write another one about the same subject, then he would have to change the format in some way so that his readers will not get tired of reading the first novel. He could, for instance, include a note-taking section in his second novel. The change to a note-taking novel would require the writer to turn in a complete manuscript – one that is bound to be different from his first novel. Sometimes the length of a story may differ from the originally planned length. This happens especially when the author has to include characters from other novels in his story.
Some authors opt for a term book. This is a collection of short stories, generally no more than forty pages, which can be bought along with the original publication. A term book does not contain the entire content of the original publication; however, some of the content may be altered to make it a shorter text. A term book will most often contain short stories that belong to a set of novels that have been bound together under the name of ‘term’.
There are many collections of short stories that belong to a group known as the Hofelder collections. The original work of J. M. Hofelder was his collection of over two hundred short stories. The most famous collection of stories called the Standard Library of Short Stories was begun at the University of Chicago. The term has stuck and today the collections are in great demand and also serve as a basis for many a successful screenplay and movie.
